The days are getting shorter and cooler but the demand for volunteers is the same as ever! If you’d like to find awesome volunteer opportunities, contact Volunteer Ottawa, an agency supported by the United Way. Call 613-736-5270 or go to their website at www.volunteerottawa.ca.
Eat Up! Ecology Ottawa needs energetic volunteers for our 4th Annual Dinner fundraiser on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Christ Church Cathedral any time from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., (especially between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.). Help with set-up, clean-up and kitchen duties. Also required are drivers to pick up food donations on Oct. 13 before 5 p.m. If you’d like to volunteer, please call 613-860-5353 or e-mail email@example.com.
Everyone wins: The Special Olympics is a win-win event for everyone involved — athletes, supporters and coaches. If you’re involved in a sport, if you want to share it with others, if you feel a commitment to developmentally disabled youth, there’s a spot for you on the team as a coach or manager. Call Diane Black at 613-860-6184.
Get moving: Every Wednesday night, a team of volunteers, some with vehicles, picks up donations of household goods and delivers them to refugee claimant families. Helping with Furniture operates from 6 to 11 p.m. Wednesdays, and if you don’t have a vehicle, car pooling can be arranged. Obviously, some lifting is involved. Call Kristin Goff at 613-745-1348 and leave a message.
Look good, feel better: Every so often, the AIDS Committee of Ottawa presents a Women’s Social Evening for women living with HIV/AIDS. Volunteer estheticians and nail technicians provide manicures and pedicures to clients, and socialize with them over a meal. The sessions last about three hours, and there is an HIV training course for volunteers. Call Camille at 613-238-5014, ext. 228.
What am I bid?: Reach Canada is holding its 30th Annual Enchanted Auction on Thursday, Oct. 28, at St. Elias Centre, and they’re looking for volunteer help during the day and evening. Tasks include setting up for the event, acting as spotters and runners and presiding at silent auction tables from 4 to 11 p.m. and then cleaning up. Call Jenn at 613-236-6636.
I’ll be your server: Canhave operates two training and education centres in Uganda to meet the needs of Ugandan orphans and foster their efforts toward independence. The agency’s major fundraiser is a dinner on Saturday, Oct. 23, and they’re looking for volunteers to serve the meal and clean up afterwards. Servers should be at least 19 years old and arrive by 5:30 p.m. wearing dark dress pants or skirt and a white or light-coloured shirt. Call Catherine Murphy at 613-299-7466.
