Volunteer RoundUp!

There are short-term volunteer opportunities — sometimes only a few hours long — and there are other ongoing positions that require a few hours a week. Whatever your availability, you can find something to suit your time at Volunteer Ottawa, an agency supported by the United Way. Call 613-736-5270 or visit www.volunteerottawa.ca.

On the go:
Extendicare Medex doesn’t confine its activities to the residence. It gets its residents into the community with group outings and a variety of other programs. Friendly visitors and escorts for medical appointments supply more contact with the outside community while weekly bingo games and monthly crafts sessions help fill indoor time. Its programs rely on committed volunteers. Call Tammy Nicholson at 613-225-5650 ext. 402.

Welcome/bienvenue!:
Are you friendly, speak English and French, and enjoy working in a busy environment? Volunteer Ottawa needs a part-time volunteer receptionist. Contact Joan Anderson, 613-736-5266 ext. 154.

All about books:
If you have an equal interest in books and retail activity, the Friends of the Ottawa Public Library needs you. You can be volunteer manager of the new St. Laurent self-serve bookstore or a helper sorting and shelving the books. You can do the same at the new facility on Woodroffe Avenue (opening in March). Some of these tasks involve lifting and stretching. Call Shirley Felker at 613-580-2424 ext. 14383.

Feeding body and soul:
Longfields Manor provides care and assistance to its residents with the help of volunteers. Needed now are feeding assistants to help residents at mealtimes. Contact Monty Domingo at 613-823-8999 ext. 225.

A way with design: The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies has a great position for volunteers who care about animals and want to add to a portfolio in graphic design/layout. Contact Lori Waller, 613-224-8072, ext. 12.

Fundraising and websites:
EcoEquitable helps immigrant women gain work experience through turning recycled materials into fashionable handbags and offering other sewing services. They need volunteers. Contact Heidi Duhaime at 613-562-1739.
