Volunteer Round Up!

The dog days of summer are here. There are lots of volunteer opportunities both in air-conditioned comfort as well as outdoors in the sun. Career guides:

The Ottawa Chinese Community Service Centre is looking for volunteers in the accounting and human resources fields to train as mentors to internationally educated professionals seeking career advancement in Canada. They have space for 15 candidates in a training program beginning in September where clients and mentors share job search strategies, brainstorming and network building. Girl Guides: Girl Guides of Canada

A group of Pathfinders, girls between 12 and 14 years, is looking for a woman to help their Guide Leader. The Pathfinders meet Thursday evenings in Kanata north from September to June. The program is fun, it’s varied, and it includes trips and camp. Call Nicole Moore at 1-800-565-8111.

One child at a time:

Roots of Empathy is a program that engages schoolchildren and a local parent and baby in developing empathy, reducing aggression and bullying, and raising social competence.

The agency is looking for volunteer instructors. The two-year commitment includes attendance at a three-day training program and 27 classroom sessions from October to June. Requirements are strong communication skills, some background in education, child and community development, and cultural sensitivity. Contact ckalogeras@rootsofempathy.org.

The next step:

Once clients of Dress for Success are employed, they face a new challenge: building a network of support systems to back them in their new life. The Professional Women’s Group provides the information the clients need, in a comfortable and safe environment. Duties of the manager of the group include organizing the schedule of speakers and mentors, co-ordinating training of the volunteers, maintaining records and communicating with Dress for Success Worldwide. The cup that cheers:

Aug. 12 is the date to be at Watson’s Mill in Manotick. They’re having their annual wine-tasting event with live music, snacks and representatives from wineries. And, of course, with volunteers to help with setup and teardown, food service, meeting and greeting guests, and generally being useful. They also need Smart Serve-qualified people to help the wineries’ reps. This should be a fun opportunity for a family or affinity group. Call Melanie Parker at 613-692-6455.

Join in the fun:

Anglican Social Services Centre 454 is a weekday drop-in centre providing support to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Volunteers are needed to assist staff with the Social Recreation Program to engage participants in social recreation activities such as cards, board games, various groups; literacy, literary, arts and crafts. The ideal volunteer would be professional, passionate and compassionate through the building of relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries. This person will have opportunities to engage quieter participants and encourage a sense of community. Contact Elizabeth Tyrwhitt at 613-235-4351.
