Friendly and/or own a friendly pet? Carlingview Manor is looking to fill a few different volunteer positions. One position is a pet therapy volunteer in which you and your pet will visit residents. The next two positions are friendly visitors to visit residents who do not have family to see over the holiday season; one of the positions requires an Italian speaking person and speakers of other languages are welcome.  Police check required for each position. Kick-off!  Join the planning team for the 9th annual Community Cup Celebration – a multicultural ‘day in the park’ with a recreational soccer tournament, citizenship ceremony, Kids Zone, dance performances.  We’re recruiting diverse, enthusiastic volunteers to lead in the areas of partnerships, social media, site management, and food services or offer planning support in the areas of sponsorship, marketing, communications, and interactive programming.  Time commitment required is monthly meetings of the core planning team, team meetings as needed and availability for the weekend of the event, June 30th, 2012.  Contact Laurie before January 16th to book an interview.  laurie@communitycup.ca 613 232 9634 x 345

2012 Community Cup

Variety of Volunteers:  Extendicare Starwood, a long-term care facility in Ottawa’s west end, is always looking for new volunteers looking to improve the quality of life of the 192 residents that call Starwood ‘Home’.  If you have musical talent – they have the piano and guitar.   Meal time assistants are welcome for all meals – even breakfast for those early risers!   Do you speak different languages?  Friendly visitors are welcome in any language, including English.  Do you like helping people to look their best?  Manicures are always welcome.  A hairdresser helper is also required.  Please note that an interview, a Police Records check and 2 step tuberculosis test are required. Sweet volunteering: Carefor Health and Community Services is hosting its 9th annual Chocolate competition. Lots of pre-event preparation is necessary to ensure its success. Teams of volunteers are needed to Research potential new auction sponsors and communicate with them to secure donations, contact potential donors by phone (a script and training are provided), pick up available auction items and create a database. You should have strong communication skills and knowledge of MS Office Suite. Or,  if you have good manual dexterity, attention to detail and patience for a repetitive job you could help create 600 dessert flags for the event. Living and Learning:  Compass Centre for Self-Directed Learning is a learning centre that helps teens aged 12-18  to live and learn without school by supporting them to create a customized education based on their interests, abilities, and goals, drawing on their intrinsic motivation; the goals and expectations of each class is agreed upon by the teacher and students at the outset. Needed are volunteers who could share their expertise in the following areas: drama; music – vocals and/or instrumental; reading and math tutors; architectural knowledge; and artists in general. The time commitment is once per week for either one 1 or 1 ½ hours. While a teaching certificate isn’t required, a passion for what you do is. Gift of your time:  The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre is a long-term care home to 450 residents which includes 250 veterans. Our volunteers are involved in various programs and services including staffing the Gift Shop.  The volunteers work in pairs, and work 4-hour shifts.  If you have good customer service skills and can handle money, this position is for you.
