ChangeTheWorld: Why I Volunteer – Mary Li

For every high school student, 40 hours of volunteering is mandatory. However, just because it is a requirement to graduate doesn’t mean that it isn’t enjoyable, as many students far exceed 40 hours.

For me, volunteering is about making myself useful to the community. It gives me the opportunity to give back and thank others for what they’ve done for me and also so that other people can enjoy the community as I’ve enjoyed it. Apart from the benefits of contributing to the community, volunteering also helps me personally.

Being in unfamiliar situations that arise from volunteering and interacting with new people gives me experience and the confidence needed in the occurrence of similar situations. Though everyone will find different benefits in volunteering, it is always beneficial, to the community and to themselves.
